Indiana’s most dangerous highways

On Behalf of | Mar 13, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Indiana has several major highways, including I-80, I-90, U.S. 41, and U.S. 30. These roads are notorious for accidents.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the state saw an average of 862 fatalities from 2016 to 2020. Of these, a significant number occurred on the highways mentioned above.

I-80 and I-90

I-80 and I-90 are major interstates running through northern Indiana, connecting Chicago with the east coast. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, they see heavy traffic, with an average daily traffic volume of over 50,000 vehicles. The convergence of these two highways with U.S. 41 and U.S. 30 creates a treacherous stretch of road that has seen numerous accidents.

U.S. 41

U.S. 41 runs north-south through western Indiana. It is a major commercial route that connects the Midwest to the southern United States. The heavily traveled road has seen many accidents, particularly in the areas where it intersects with other major highways.

U.S. 30

U.S. 30, which runs east-west through northern Indiana, is another major highway with its fair share of accidents. It sees heavy traffic with several intersections with other major roads.

The Indiana Department of Transportation implemented several safety measures, including the installation of rumble strips, the widening of shoulders, and the addition of median barriers. Also, the department increased police patrols and launched public awareness campaigns to encourage safe driving habits.

The convergence of I-80, I-90, U.S. 41, and U.S. 30 has created a hazardous stretch of road that is heavily traveled and has seen many accidents. While the Indiana Department of Transportation works to address the issue, drivers must exercise caution and follow safe driving practices.
