Child Custody, Support, and Visitation
Indiana child custody lawyer protects your rights
Issues concerning children can be emotional and are often contested matters during divorce. At Sachs & Hess, PC, our Indiana divorce lawyers can help you protect your rights and resolve issues in the best interests of the children.
Child custody
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 84 percent of custodial parents are mothers and 16 percent are fathers. Despite the wide disparity in percentages, Indiana courts want both parents to have interaction with their children. Statistics show that positive child development and the child’s well being are usually enhanced with nurturing from both parents. We discuss custody options with clients and work to negotiate favorable settlements or litigate, if necessary.
Indiana courts use child custody guidelines and base custody decisions on a variety of factors, such as:

The child's interaction with parents, siblings, and other persons who have significant influence on the child's best interests are also considered.
Visitation—parenting time guidelines
Under the Indiana Rules of Court, visitation is referred to as parenting time and guidelines emphasize the importance of the time that a parent spends with the child. Guidelines take into consideration the fact that each child is unique with particular circumstances and needs. Parents should tailor parenting time arrangements and also allow flexibility for changes that may arise as the child grows up.

Indiana child support guidelines
Child support in Indiana is subject to Indiana child support guidelines. The 2009 guideline changes require parents who earn a high income to pay more support than previously. Also, adjustments were made for parents earning lower incomes to pay less support. Our child support lawyers can help you evaluate child support and how the guidelines apply to your situation.
